Rhymes

by Dr Ken George

Rhymes can teach us a lot about Cornish.

Most of the extant Middle Cornish material is in rhyme, but the rhymes are less strict than those of cynghanedd in Welsh or the intricate internal rhymes in Breton. Nevertheless, poets favoured strict rhymes rather than loose rhymes. Were rhymes between tas 'father' and bras 'big' strict or loose? The answer is available in Cornish or in English.

Cornish is also sufficiently versatile to allow translation of poems, hymns and songs which use the Germanic system of rhyming.
